Vitamin D is a spectrum of organic chemicals called calciferols, which vary in structure but all seem to have at least one important structural property: oxygen with a negatively charged lone pair of electrons.

The oxygen electrons are attracted to the mineral calcium, which is positively charged. Together, the two form a complex of the two which is more bio-available. This means that the mineral calcium, along with it’s “cofactor” vitamin D, work together as a unit to be better-assimilated into the body.

The complex can reach water in the body and tissues made of water (most of the body) but most importantly, the complex can also reach fatty/oily parts of the body (like crossing the cell membranes). If you don’t, then the calcium alone has trouble crossing fatty cell membranes (lipid bilayer structure) and the intestines, so it just passes through the digestive system without getting taken up by parts of the body that need it.

The benefit of natural calcium-containing foods is that they already contain the vitamin D, and so foods rich in calcium already have the complex. Think dairy (like raw, whole milk, which has everything a body needs). Just avoid pasteurized milk, which causes problems with assimilation.

Also, research shows that supplementing your diet with alkaline minerals helps to minimize back pain.

While not the most assimilable form of the mineral calcium (like so many rock minerals sold in stores), it does absorb around 3-5%, depending on your health and age. Just keep in mind: the body can’t absorb much from rock minerals (like most solid supplement tablets, which are often found in quantity, undissolved in portable toilets). Clays are slightly better, but nowhere near 90%.

A highly acidic diet is said to increase metabolic acidosis, which, on the other hand, increases the risk of you getting kidney disease. Ways To Measure The Salivary And Urine PH Using PH Strips

It is important to do a pH test to check how alkaline or acidic your body is. Knowing your pH levels helps you determine the course you need to take, as far as your health is concerned. If your body is highly acidic, you can make huge adjustments to your diet, to create an alkalizing effect on your body’s pH. It is recommended to test both your urine and saliva to get the accurate results. Test the pH at different times of the day as you record the readings over some time.

Just FYI, I was introduced to this idea by an MD (oncologist) who does alternative treatments including alkaline diet, high-dose vitamin C, hyperbaric oxygen, energy therapy, meditation, IV infusions of EDTA and vitamins, and other detoxifying supplements like chlorella, essential oils, probiotics, etc. I think he has the right idea, but he never shared the secret “easy way” I will drop below…

Saliva Test

Before you do the test, you need to wait for two hours after you have eaten or drank a meal. Proceed to fill your mouth with saliva and then swallow it. This helps to eliminate any acidic bacteria that may be present. Put some saliva on a spoon and then dip the strip to test the pH. Use saliva that is free from any bubbles. Ensure that both pads on the test strip are covered in the liquid and then remove it. Wait for 15 seconds and then match the color reading against the indicator chart in the pH test strip packaging.

That is the “proper procedure,” but I don’t do that myself. I just dip the pH paper into my tongue saliva directly and wait 15 seconds for reading. It’s good to do this several times a day.

Urine Test

I don’t really like going in for bloodletting or other lab analyses anymore. But I have a lot of data from over the years on myself, after being compelled to do bloodletting by a host of MDs.

For this test, you are advised to use the first urine of the day, since it’s usually more acidic than normal. Place the pH test strip in the urine stream and allow both pads on the test strip to be covered in the liquid. Proceed to shake off any excess fluid and then wait for a few seconds. Compare the color change to the color chart and then throw away the used pH test strip.

How Long Does It Take For Someone To Improve Their PH Levels?

There are two ways for someone to achieve an alkaline salivary pH round-the-clock: the easy way, and the hard way. Let me explain:

Easy Way (Through Your Water)

Fulvic and Humic minerals (classified scientifically as Vegetable Bio-Mass Minerals). This is decomposed vegetable matter sourced from rich veins in the earth.

I recommend reading the article on hydrotherapy, or “water-therapy,” which I wrote last month, describing how useful it is for me to help replace insulin therapy in my Type 1 Diabetes if you want to learn more about how water is good medicine in itself. I can’t do it full justice here. But it’s a good supplementary resource for you if you’re curious.

Anyways, humic/fulvic minerals are sometimes used to fertilize crops by very well-educated growers in a holistic manner (including all the raw minerals that the life forms need, including a slew of trace minerals counting 80 or more). In short, the longest-lived and most disease-free people on the planet often have varying diets, but they share something in common: the sources of their water.

The best water contains the whole spectrum of the aforementioned minerals because it is glacial “milk” pouring from the mountain heights, where the ice and water erode 4 inches annually of rich stone at a molecular level. Hard Way (Through Your Food)

It’s worth mentioning, because you will get this recommendation from a variety of alternative practitioners, from chiropractors to more-enlightened MDs to acupuncturists and practitioners of Chinese/Eastern medicine.

Creating an alkaline body this way does require you to sacrifice much. You need to make a few changes when it comes to your diet, following the famed “Alkaline Diet,” and soon enough, you’ll start seeing the changes. For a start, you need to take a lot of vitamins and minerals through supplements or diet. Drinking lots of water and minimizing processed foods is also a good way to reduce your body’s acidic levels. Since this is a lifestyle, you need to manage your pH levels sustainably. If you have to eat meat, consider lean meat instead. Eat the meat once a week as opposed to how you were eating before. Slowly, you will start noticing that you have more energy and that your body is feeling way better.

You need to look at your diet and make the necessary changes if you realize that your acidic levels are too high. Consider the tips discussed above to make a lifetime change.

So How Long?

I can’t say for sure in my limited experience treating myself. I’ve tried so many things. But I would expect to see results within a few days or weeks at least, depending on the amount of trace minerals deficiencies which have accumulated in the body over decades. Why Natural Fats and Oils Are Among Nature’s Healthiest Foods

Ever notice what a huge, embarrassing failure the low-fat diet has been for Americans? Since it’s popularity began in the 1990’s, Americans have suffered increasingly from obesity, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, ulcers… you name it. Autism…

Ever hear of the X Factor? Or vitamin F? Probably not. What a travesty of ignorance, perpetuated by the FDA.

Here’s the short story: The dentist Weston A. Price toured a variety of cultures in the beginning of the 20th century around the world. He observed that peoples who ate the ancient diet of their ancestors thrived without disease, with straight teeth and beautiful broad facial structures. But after they switched to the processed foods of “Western Civilization,” their health deteriorated and they got all manner of “diseases of civilization,” including crooked teeth, cavities, narrow underdeveloped facial structures, and the whole host of nutritional ailments from diabetes to obesity, cancer and everything in between.

Genetics didn’t matter. Nutrition is everything. Dr. Price said that he attributed what he called the nutritional “X Factor” or “Activator X” found in ancient diets to fat-soluble nutrients. He did not isolate the X Factor but identified it’s presence in a large variety of foods such as raw whole milk, butter, cheese, organ meats (offal), nose-to-tail diets, oily fish, raw nuts and seeds, coconut oil, oily fruits like olives and avocados, and beef tallow (a rendered form of fat trimmings from cattle).

Fast forward some decades to Dr. Royal Lee. He took an interest in nutrition from a very young age and eventually healed his mother’s cancer through nutritional supplements he made at home from whole foods. He would go on to read the works of Dr. Price and isolate and concentrate the X Factor, deciding to rename it “Vitamin F.” You can think of Vitamin F as being “vitamin (healthy) fat.”

Vitamin F is a spectrum of nutrients that are fat-soluble in animals and their byproducts. That’s in contrast to water-soluble nutrients like Vitamin C (also a spectrum of compounds). What is a spectrum? It is very different from what you find on drug store shelves, which are purified and patentable chemical compounds and molecules that exist as only 1 “isomer.” That’s chemistry speak for ultra pure. The problem is that the ultra pure petrochemical compounds sold as drugs and “vitamins” are lacking dozens, hundreds, if not thousands of co-factors, enzymes, and complementary isomers which belong to the same group of molecules/compounds. You need the full spectrum because they harmonize and synergize with one another in the body.

Another risk of highly purified patentable garbage is that when not taken with the necessary co-factors, it depletes your body’s natural stores of those things. So benefits are guaranteed to be temporary at best, if at all as they eat away at your body’s nutritional stores. Helpful Keto Recipe and Ingredient Substitutions to Alleviate Pica

If you haven’t guessed, I take my nutrition cues from the Weston A. Price foundation. I recommend reading their website before you criticize my dietary choices.

Here’s a simple definition of pica (I also have an article on the topic): cravings for junk food caused by a deep-seated nutritional deficiency in the body. It is only resolved by adequate nutrition in adequate quantities. Junk food is empty calories that makes you fat and inflamed, but does not remedy the deficiency your body has in any helpful way.

Keep in mind that I tried the conventional “medical wisdom” i.e. low-fat, high-carb, low cholesterol and salt diet for years and only experienced deteriorating health. Now things are improving after I threw all that nonsense out the window (liver enzymes, cholesterol level, A1C, etc – not that believe in the medical profession’s bloodletting system anyways).

  1. Popcorn: a good substitute is a scrambled egg, fried in quality oil (coconut, avocado, butter, tallow) with salt and whole garlic cloves. Be sure to salt generously and fry in a deep pan with a lot of oil.
  2. Chips: kosher pickles (unsweetened with 0 carbs), green olives, sliced cucumber with heavy salt.
  3. Pancakes: a chaffle (shredded cheese and egg and keto flour waffle). Top with a concentrated slurry of stevia powder and butter.
  4. Ice Cream: Make keto ice cream from heavy cream, allulose/stevia/erythritol, cinnamon, etc. You can make it with an ice cream machine or in a gallon zip bag using ice and salt and the freezer. Either way. This stuff is delicious and 0 carb!
  5. Peanuts: sacha inchi seeds, macadamia nuts, raw sunflower seeds
  6. Peanut butter: raw pumpkin seed butter
  7. Milk: If you’re not yet on raw milk, then make some macadamia nut milk fresh. You need only filtered water, nuts, a food processor/coffee grinder, and some cheese cloth. I drink this stuff unsweetened with some vanilla, and even dissolve turmeric into it. Try suspending nutmeg or cinnamon also.
  8. Eggnog: Just make your own keto version: raw egg, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, allspice, macadamia milk (unsweetened) and stevia.
  9. Milkshake: Use a scoop of your keto ice cream and use a “Nutrabullet” food processor or something to blend it up with some unsweetened macadamia milk and whatever spices you like. Avoid cacao, as it has carbs in it even unprocessed/pure.
  10. Latte: Make a keto latte: black coffee, generous heavy cream, stevia, spices, etc. It’s amazing.
  11. Potato Chips (again): organic roasted seaweed snacks from Costco (salty, nutritious and addictive). No carbs in the good ones, and you can even wrap your own sushi in it.
  12. Sushi: make your own from frozen wild salmon, tuna, etc. Use the seaweed snacks and maybe some avocado, cucumber, or cauliflower rice to roll it up. Don’t forget to get the lowest carbohydrate soy sauce you can find.
  13. Hamburger: Make a lettuce wrap using romaine lettuce. Be sure to mix your own patties by hand and use generous salt and spices to get a great flavor. Pan fried is quick and easy and highly nutritious. If you use a butcher, have them grind in some extra fat and organ meats to get more of a whole food nutritional boost.
  14. Chocolate Milk: Make your own with a glass of unsweetened macadamia milk (<1 carb), a heaping spoonful of unsweeted cocoa powder (1 net carb), and a generous amount of stevia. It takes a lot of stirring, but it does dissolve cold and tastes as delicious and refreshing as the Nestle garbage made with regular milk. Instead of tearing you down with sugar, this chocolate milk builds you up. If you’re not going super low-carb, then substitute the macadamia milk for raw goat or cow milk.

Long story short, you can turn any junk food you crave into a healthy nutritional powerhouse that nourishes your body and doesn’t make you fat. The key to not making you fat is that it is low-carb and still nutritionally dense, so it satisfies your pica at the root cause (nutritional deficiency). These snacks also have the benefit of being tastier than the things you were originally craving.

Why People With Blood Sugar Problems Have Emotional Imbalances

Long story short: every hormone is a chemical. And every hormone has an associated emotion attached to it. Think about cortisol: it is a stress hormone. In fact, most hormones are stress hormones, insulin included. Yes we need them to build and rebuild the bodies, but minimizing their utilization by the body by optimizing metabolic processes through nutritional therapy will lead to improved emotional states in the body.

Why is insulin a stress hormone? Because eating sugar is stressful on the body. Carbohydrates are not an essential nutrient. So they are to be consumed only in small amounts, as little as possible! The body treats the glucose released by carbohydrates as a toxin. Yes, glucose is toxic in excess amounts. Cancer cells, for example, are obligate glucose metabolizers. That is why any MD worth his salt will prescribe a low-carbohydrate diet to a cancer patient, so as to starve out the cancer cells. You can also starve out fungal infections in the body.

If you suffer from depression as a diabetic, now you know the cause. It is hormonal. Yes, all of us diabetics are hormonal. So we need to have war strategies to prevent these hormones from poisoning our bodies and giving us toxic emotional states which self-perpetuate themselves. Antidepressant pharmaceutical witchcraft will not help you. It will interfere with normal hormone systems and cause infertility as long as you use the poisons.

Alcoholics can be violent and angry because of they are poisoned by hormones/emotions. People with blood sugar issues can be the same way: angry, inexplicably harboring hatred and irritation, depressed, and so on. The solution is to remove the poisons and re-establish natural hormonal processes in the body.

Keep in mind that introducing exogenous hormones into the body down-regulates the bodies natural ability to create that hormone on its own. So if you give someone an insulin injection, you are telling the organs responsible for regulating insulin (pancreas, liver, etc) that they can go ahead and atrophy and go away, because they are not needed.

So minimize hormone therapy as best as you can to best remove chemical poisoning from your emotions and “medicines.” You can literally poison yourself with negative emotions. Here are some strategies to eliminate poisonous emotions (read my article about cortisol for more info.):

  1. Stop watching national news (they perpetuate fear, divisiveness, and baseless hatred amongst brothers)
  2. Go low-carb/keto if you are on insulin therapy.
  3. Switch your morning alarm clock away from stressful ringers and beeps, and more towards natural sounds like birds singing, harp music, waves crashing, water falling, etc. Rise gently in the morning.
  4. Synchronize your body with the rhythms of your environment. Rise at dawn and sleep at dusk. Pay attention to the moon and know its phase. Mind the Hebrew calendar and regard the wisdom of King Solomon, son of David, King of Israel: For every thing there is a time/season, a time for healing, a time for … For example, the Hebrew month of Iyaar literally means “G-d is my healer.” That would make that time of year a good time to heal!
  5. Avoid negative speech about others. Give others the benefit of the doubt.
  6. Avoid people that speak ill of others, unless it is absolutely necessary (like warning others not to be taken advantage of). Distance yourself from those who propagate hatred and fascination with abominations.
  7. Pray to G-d for wisdom. Trust in Him. Look for Him speaking to you in the world.
  8. Trust yourself more than you trust medical doctors. Better yet, be your own doctor. And use doctors as the limited sources of experience and information that they are – mere humans.

Some Reasons for Blood Sugar Spikes in Type 1 Diabetes

  1. Living with type 1 diabetes since the age of 14 (2 decades) I have at times been puzzled by blood sugar spikes despite maintaining an A1C under 6%. The algebra equation I was originally provided by the endocrinologist only had 3 or 4 variables. But I have noticed there are really about 20, some of which I explain here.
  2. Dehydration: As we say in chemical laboratories, “the solution to pollution is dilution.” When your body is not holding enough water, glucose concentration in the blood rises because the volume of blood is low. Concentration = (quantity of glucose)/blood volume. Read my post about hydrotherapy for type 1 diabetes for the full scoop.
  3. Delayed metabolism of proteins and fats: About 10% of fats and up to 50% of proteins consumed can be converted to glucose through gluconeogenesis in the liver and skeletal muscle. Protein metabolism takes 2-4 hours. Fat metabolism takes 2-8 hours.
  4. Over-consumption of protein: The body can assimilate only so much amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) at any given time and any given day. I suspect this is around 100 grams max per day for a 150 pound person. I’ll need to investigate that quantity further. But regardless, when you eat more protein than your body’s cells need, the excess is converted to glucose through gluconeogenesis for storage (glucose is the building block of fat it seems).
  5. Strenuous exercise: This breaks down muscle through a process known as catabolism under certain conditions. It also increases absorption of insulin into the tissues – the lower level signals glucagon release and hence the release of glucose into the blood from the glycogen stores. The solution is not to overexert yourself. Moderate aerobic exercise is inherently fat-burning (ketone burning) and below the “anaerobic threshold,” the body won’t start releasing glucagon hormone to breakdown glycogen into unwanted glucose (which a T1D will struggle to assimilate without enough insulin supply).
  6. Stress: Stress in many forms can do sabotage your blood sugar. Read my post about cortisol for more info.
  7. Not enough sleep:

On the other side of the equation, just wanted to mention one reason for seemingly unexplained blood sugar drops (hypoglycemia in severe cases): Delayed release of insulin from injection site: As one example, insulin glargine (such as Lantus long-acting) is present as a crystal in the injection site. The crystals can accumulate and then suddenly dissolve as conditions in the body change (pH, hydration, exercise, etc.) Just keep in mind that some types of insulin build up in the tissues. In glargine specifically, it is injected as an acidic clear solution but then crystalizes in the alkaline environment in the subcutaneous tissue.

Just realize that insulin therapy is governed by a complex equation that is only an approximation. The body is a wonder created by HaShem (the Holy One of Israel). It is infinitely more complex than we can conceive. Hormone therapy in general is degrading and it is best to minimize and wean off it as best you can. When you introduce an exogenous hormone such as insulin into the body, it immediately induces chemical (hormone/emotional) and electrochemical (disharmonizing) influence on more than one system and organ.

Also keep in mind that long-term insulin therapy has long-term deleterious side effects, even when one maintains ideal A1C levels.

Spacing Meals Strategy for Type 1 Diabetes

The goal here is to avoid blood sugar spikes (hyperglycemia) by eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. There are several reasons for this. On a keto diet, where net carbohydrates are minimized to less than 5 or 10 per day (very easy to do with the right guidance on cooking and snacking), the impact of protein on blood sugar becomes more obvious and an important factor to consider. We all know that carbohydrates are not an essential nutrient. Fats and proteins are. Get the idea out of your head that fats are bad. There are good fats that heal, and bad fats that kill. We just focus on eating the fats that heal in huge quantities and forget about the propaganda and misinformation put out by the USDA at the behest of big corn, big soy, big wheat, and other corporate stooges.

Now that we know that the best diet for a T1D (type 1 diabetic) is about a 1:1 ratio of healthy fat to protein (in line with pemmican, the “bread of the wilderness,” which is said to maintain a working individual in perfect health, indefinitely, for as many years as necessary, working 16 hours per day outdoors in the wild), we can talk a little about good fats and bad fats. It’s also worth mentioning before we begin that the healthiest dogs in the world are sled dogs, like in the Iditarod race across Alaska. They eat pemmican, a 50:50 mix of rendered fat (tallow) and dried protein (dehydrated lean muscle tissue i.e. meat). Read about the Pemmican Wars if you want to dive into this fascinating subject on your own.

Namely, it wasn’t until processed foods arrived to peoples around the world that the diseases of civilization caught up with them (crooked teeth, obesity, diabetes, the flu, and so on). The foods our ancestors ate 5,000 years ago are what we need to thrive. The whole idea that disease is caused by faulty genetics is a piece of Darwinian fake news. If you’re a Semite like me, then you come from a strong stock of shepherds who thrive on fresh fish, cattle meat, tallow, fat, raw milk, cheese, salt, butter, heavy cream, and seasonal whole produce like seaweed, herbs, spices, olives, coconuts and dates in small quantities. If you aren’t 100% sure what your ancestors ate, then know that you can’t go wrong with fish. Fish are found in oceans and rivers and lakes the world over. It’s a universal food and currency of vitality. Kosher fish (with fins and scales) are probably healthier because they aren’t bottom feeders and the scales make them less vulnerable to parasitic attack. In fact, I have a hunch that the ancients were a lot smarter than people today. So I trust the kosher laws of the so-called “Old Testament” of the Hebrew Bible as the word of G-d.

Now onto the spacing of meals. In short, gluconeogenesis is the process by which about 50% of the proteins the average person eats, and 10% of the fats/oils they eat are converted to glucose by the liver. We can decrease this gluconeogenesis mostly by not eating more protein than the body needs. So you need to figure that out. I think a 150 pound person that walks about an hour a day does well on about 80-120 grams of protein daily. Too much at any one time throughout the day though and the body can’t take in the massive dose of amino acids, so gluconeogenesis turns on. Avoid this by spacing the protein into at least several smaller meals throughout the day. I do about 5-6. Also, be aware that if your body goes into starvation mode, where you aren’t eating enough, then gluconeogenesis turns on again to break down your own muscle tissue into glucose. So you want to avoid losing weight by keeping an eye on the bathroom scale from time to time.

Bread and Type 1 Diabetes

Contrary to popular perception, bread can be made of nearly anything. Remember the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, when the giant says “Fee fi fo fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman. Be he live or be he dead, I’ll grind his BONES to make my bread.”

I have never been able to shake the desire for bread and butter. For many years, I thought I would have to do without, because I only knew bread rich in carbohydrates (the cheapest source of nutrition, which thanks to processing is now nutritionally bankrupt and therefore unsatisfying). Now I have found how easy it is to use a coffee grinder to make my own flours, and a bread machine to easily bake my own fresh bread. “Bread is the staff of life” is another biblical truth.

My favorite ketogenic four is made from fresh ground hulled raw sunflower seed. It provides about a 1:1 ratio of healthy, heat-stable fat (high smoke point) to healthy protein. The net carbs are very low, so each slice of thick, hearty bread is probably under 1 net carbohydrate. It doesn’t seem to budge my blood sugar at all, and I slather it with butter and salt.

In the past I tried hulled raw pumpkin seed and raw walnut. But these contain therapeutic oils which are heat sensitive. The degradation occurs at even low baking temperatures over 200F. So I now stick to eating them raw in my mixed nut snacks.

Other good heat-stable flours can be made from sacha inchi seed, macadamia nut, and yes, bone. You just need a good way to reduce whole bones to a fine powder meal, such as a ball mill. I guarantee that eating this way will provide you rich, satisfying nutrition which means you can eat less and feel better day by day. Dried meat also works. Simply powder it in the food grinder or coffee grinder.

You can also make delicious keto pizza crust this way. I never liked cauliflower crust, and don’t recommend it. My suggestions have the lowest carbs anyways, which is best suited to T1Ds. If you only have T2D then you can do ok on things like almond flour and coconut flour. Those aren’t low-carb enough for my taste though.

Fungal Infection/Candida

Fungi grow as a mycelium network in forest ground cover. One spore seen above ground as a mushroom is actually part of a larger organism, a network which spreads underground and pops up in other places.

If you have “seasonal allergies” then you may think that allergens are the root cause of symptoms like runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, some food sensitivity, lethargy, recurring seasonal sinus infections, etc. I found that by targeting the underlying fungal infection, I eliminated most of those problems significantly.

It can take years to root out all of the “underground” fungal network in the body. Since temporary symptom relief only means that the fungus is on the defense. Be assured, you have to persist to kill it all out.

Since fungi feed on dead wood and material in the forest, they benefit the environment by breaking down forest litter into glucose which they feed on. Think of wood and forest litter as hot-burning fuel, also known as carbohydrates. Hence the “heat” of damp heat. The dampness is self-explanatory. Fungi thrive in warm, damp environments, like the musty surface beneath the forest litter field.

Starve out the fungus through carbohydrate restriction. This means your blood will greatly reduce the total volume of glucose it is processing each day. This can take years. An old natural medicine rule of thumb is that for every year you had a disease, you can expect about a month to heal. So if you had this 20 years, then expect complete healing to take around 20 months, or almost 2 years. 

Starving out the fungus is the only way to get 100% healed. Pharmaceuticals only provide temporary relief, hacking at the branches of the mycelium network but not touching the deep roots. There are some other methods to get symptom relief and fight the fungi though, without poisoning the gut and navel with antibiotic pharmaceuticals. Nasal rinse with dissolved buffered salt and nano silver solution is highly effective. Adding 2 drops of orange oil is helpful. Orange oil is also anti-fungal and imparts a pleasant aroma. My experience using these rinses, during times of profuse runny nose, is to draw out more of the mucus living in the sinuses, and fight back the encroachment of the fungi for several days. I have been advised to do it daily but haven’t done this yet.

This is probably the cause of all kinds of seemingly inexplicable blood sugar spikes. Minimizing carbohydrate intake does a lot. I don’t want to discount it. But even when I got down to under 5 or 10 net carbs per day I would sometimes get spikes. And I don’t cheat. Haven’t cheated in 3 months. It’s not worth it.

So clearly carbohydrate restriction only does so much. And knowing about gluconeogenesis, we have part of the puzzle. The other part seems to be the influence of cortisol on glycogen in the liver and muscles. Stress causes cortisol release, which in turn causes glycogen to break down to glucose and be released into the blood. Stressful events for me include: waking suddenly and jumping out of bed to turn off an abrasive alarm clock sound, waking up from a bad dream, listening to angering news, fighting with people, or lingering on bad thought patterns and obsessive compulsive behaviors (like washing hands and kitchen utensils after every little soiling, even if it’s just oil or butter or cheese). 

I like to remind myself that my ancestors didn’t wash their hands 10 times a day with antibacterial soap. And they were just fine. I’m here, aren’t I? Clearly it is me that messed up along the way to end up with diabetes, the end stage of a progression of the more general metabolic syndrome (diagnosed by eastern practitioners as “damp heat”).

What is Pica?

Not often discussed in the medical community, pica is thought to be at the root of most diseases. Ever wonder why some babies will eat paint chips or be seen “cribbing?” They are trying to get minerals lacking in their diets. Pica is compulsive eating, commonly experienced by adults as going to the refrigerator and staring inside with the door open, looking for something to eat. The Standard American Diet (SAD) leaves most people with a constant nagging, deep-seated hunger in the pit of the stomach that cannot be satisfied by the nutritionally bankrupt processed foods we find all around us.

Pica is mineral deficiency, and there are over 80 essential trace minerals from the periodic table of elements that our bodies need. In fact, each organ in the body has a mineral associated with it and its function. For example, calcium for bones, chromium for the pancreas, iodine for thyroid, and so on. Autopsies on tens of thousands of animals reveal a direct correlation between disease in a given organ and a deficiency in the mineral needed for that organ to be healthy and function according to nature’s (G-d’s) design.

Dr. Joel Wallach recommends colloidal mineral supplementation from humic shale/fulvic source because as opposed to solid mineral supplements commonly found in cheap drug stores which only can be absorbed around 3% by our bodies, these colloidal suspensions of the full spectrum of essential minerals are absorbed at rates as high as 90% by our bodies. His general protocol seems to indicate that every time a person gets a hunger pang/craving, they should eat and take a shot of colloidal minerals. Even if that means 10 shots a day. That’s because many of us have deep-seated mineral deficiencies in our bodies which we accumulated over decades. Some are even intergenerational deficiencies based on where we live and get our foods from and the depleted soils the foods come from. In fact, being the first born out of the mother’s womb means having the first grab at her mineral supply. Second and third-born children get sloppy second and thirds on a nutritionally-deficient mother’s meager supply.

Raw milk is also a great all-around multivitamin and supplement to fortify the body and rebuild health. Milk has everything the baby calf needs to grow, develop and thrive. So it stands to reason that it has everything that YOU need too. If you’ll only wake up and realize that doctors don’t study nutrition in medical schools, they know nothing about this sort of thing.

I also don’t want to discount the spiritual root of disease (tzaaras – the Hebrew word for disease in the Hebrew Bible). G-d seems to use pica as a way to manifest tzaaras.

Hydrotherapy for Type 1 Diabetes (Diabetes mellitus T1)

The average volume of blood in a 150 pound individual is about 5 liters. If you drink 1 liter of water, then you just diluted the blood and thereby decreased the blood glucose concentration by ⅙, or about 17%. I have found that drinking water in quantity is an effective first line defense and remedy for slightly elevated blood glucose (hyperglycemia).

For example, if I get a reading of 150 mg/dL, and I drink 1L (one liter) of water in 10 minutes or so, then within 10 minutes, my blood sugar will respond by dropping 10-15%, down to 135-140 mg/dL, within my acceptable postprandial (after meal) range.  I find that this hydrotherapy is faster and safer than insulin therapy (1 unit of rapid insulin subcutaneously will lower glucose concentration by about 20 mg/dL over the course of 2 hours for me personally).

I find that the power of hydrotherapy is most helpful on a low or zero-carbohydrate diet, because any episodes of hyperglycemia are usually not more than 150-170 mg/dL, and can thereby be brought back into range with 1-4 liters of water consumed in a short amount of time.  I can’t speak to it’s effectiveness with a high-carbohydrate diet, because the swings in blood glucose concentration are more dramatic and harder to control.

I add a few pinches of sea salt of Himalayan salt to my filtered water to ward off mineral deficiency. If I find myself experiencing leg cramps at night, then I know I am mineral deficient and take appropriate action through supplementation with Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) in my drinking water.

  1. Green olives: who’s going to say that eating lots of olives is bad for you? I eat them like popcorn now, because they have only 1 carb and 1 fiber (0 net carbs) per serving of about 3 olives. I don’t worry about salt because I believe it is a myth that sodium chloride causes blood pressure dysregulation.
  2. Kosher Pickles: It’s the salt craving I am satisfying here. The first thing any rancher puts out is a salt lick for cattle. Seems like they’re onto something right? We eat often because we crave salt. Pickles give you salt and some vitamins without the carbs. Definitely no empty calories here.
  3. Salted Seaweed Packs: These are available in health stores and now in bulk at Costco. They are an addictive 0-carb snack with a nice 1:1 ratio of fat:protein from the avocado oil in which they are roasted and the natural protein in the kelp. Salty and delicious, and full of minerals like potassium.
  4. Mozzarella Cheese: I eat this by the chunk. You can also mix it with some pepperoncinis, garlic, olive oil, basil, oregano, and sliced cherry tomatoes for a tasty antipasto. I melt this onto my keto toast and pizzas also. 0 carbs.
  5. 0-0 Heavy cream (my way of saying 0 carbs, 0 protein: pure fat in other words), coffee, stevia, ginger powder, turmeric. This tastes like a latte but won’t budge blood sugar much at all. I drink this daily in the morning for sustenance. 0-0 heavy cream is a great secret recipe to make scrambled eggs creamy. Also works in other recipes.
  6. Raw sunflower seeds: A tasty snack by the handful. They’re also great for baking, and my preferred flour for pizza, sweet bread, and regular bread because they only have 1 net carb per ¼ cup. Grind them in a coffee grinder and bake (high smoke point means they’re safe for baking). Highly nutritious.
  7. Macadamia nuts: Probably the nut with the highest fat:protein ratio in existence, with only 1 net carb per ¼ cup. These nuts are expensive but give a great nutrient density that packs a super bang for the buck. You can also make your own flour from it in a coffee grinder (high smoke point good for baking) or some fresh macadamia milk by blending with water and filtering through cheesecloth.
  8. Avocados (salted with lemon juice, in sushi, out of the rind with a spoon and cinnamon, guacamole)
  9. Raw pumpkin seeds: Only about 1 net carb per ¼ cup. Pumpkin seeds contain an oil that is considered therapeutic. They taste great raw, especially mixed with sunflower, macadamia and other ketogenic nuts and seeds.
  10. Raw walnuts: Another tasty fatty nut with a natural oil considered therapeutic. Not to be roasted, because its oil is sensitive with a smoke point of as low as 200F. Raw prevents the threat of heat denigrating the therapeutic oil into toxins and carcinogens. 
  11. Canned sardines in olive oil: hear me out on these puppies. I eat them straight out of the tin. The bones are soft. It’s a soft-boned fish and the heads and organs are removed. I pepper the fish with some curry or garam masala or cayenne pepper seasoning and eat them with a spoon. The oil/water mixture is a tasty broth just like a soup. Very satisfying and they don’t budge my blood sugar. Close to being a whole food. For a whole food, eat the fish whole. Smoked has a nice flavor.
  12. Homemade sushi: (fresh-thawed Costco frozen salmon, seaweed snack, soy sauce, avocado or celery)
  13. Sacha inchi seeds: rare yet delicious to eat by the handful salted. They remind me of peanuts, but have 0 net carbohydrates. These seeds grow on vines in the East and are slowly gaining popularity in the West in ketogenic recipes and snacking.
  14. Salted cucumber slices: self-explanatory. I like the salty, crunchy texture and vitamin C boost.
  15. Celery stalks with raw pumpkin seed butter: fast and simple snack.
  16. Glass of unsweetened vanilla macadamia milk: Try it, you’ll like it. Macadamia milk has about 3g fat per 8oz serving, and can also dissolve turmeric powder for a little spice. It’s very hearty and delicious. It hits the spot for me when I want some nourishment, as it stifles that nagging hunger I get in my gut sometimes (pica).
  17. Keto toast with spread brie cheese, sliced white onion, and lox salmon

Homemade keto ice cream: You buy an electric ice cream maker off of eBay for $25 or so (2022) and the ingredients are simple: fresh heavy cream, allulose (works a little better than erythritol), unsweetened almond or macadamia milk, and whatever flavors you want to add (I like Ceylon cinnamon, nutmeg, peppermint essential oil, etc.). Try substituting cold coffee for the unsweetened milk for a coffee iced cream.
  19. Fried eggs: Can’t beat the simple preparation of an egg fried in olive oil or coconut oil or avocado oil with some salt, smoked paprika, and maybe cayenne pepper. A great wh0le food that is rich in the full spectrum of minerals.
  20. Filtered water: Yes, sometimes you misinterpret a signal from your body as hunger which is really thirst. Drinking more water will rehydrate the thirst receptors and eventually you can rely on the thirst signal again to tell you when to drink. According to Dr. Rashid Buttar though, most people live in chronic dehydration and need to drink 1-2 fluid ounces per pound of body weight they have.
